Community Involvement

Volunteer

As part of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirements, students must complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement activities. The purpose of this activity is to remind students of their community obligations and to encourage them to contribute to society beyond the minimum number of hours required as well as to continue to make a selfless contribution to their community in the future.

Students are responsible for completing the required number of hours on their own time – during lunch hour, after school, on weekends, or during school holidays – and for keeping track of their activities under the guidance of the school. Students must choose an activity that is approved by the school such as:

• Participation in local political events
• Assisting in non-profit organizations
• Assisting in sports activities at a community centre
• Helping senior citizens with daily activities
• Involvement in community events
• Volunteering at a hospital

A student who wishes to undertake an activity that is not on the approved list should receive the written approval of the school principal.
